Milford Sound

The cruise

Operators run short day cruises past Stirling Falls, Mitre Peak, and often a seal colony. Book the operator directly. Weather cancels and substitutes happen.

Milford Road

Milford Road

The drive from Te Anau over the Homer Tunnel is part of the trip. Check NZTA and DOC for closures, especially in winter avalanche season.

Milford Track and overnight boats

Milford Track and overnight boats

The famous walk ends at the sound and is a separate, highly booked Great Walk. Overnight cruises exist too.

There is no town. Facilities sit at the terminal. Sandflies are real. DOC: doc.govt.nz for the park. Confirm cruise hours with your operator.

Why visit Milford Sound

check

Walls of rock and water

Rain makes more waterfalls, not a ruined day. Fiordland is wet by design.

check

A long day from Queenstown

Many tours are 12-hour road days. Staying in Te Anau shortens the drive.

check

UNESCO Te Wahipounamu

The wider park is World Heritage. Milford is the accessible fiord, not the only one.

Getting to Milford Sound

Milford Sound, Fiordland National Park, New Zealand
  • End of State Highway 94, about 120 km from Te Anau. No through road.
  • Drive, coach tour, or small-plane / helicopter from Queenstown or Te Anau.
  • Cruises leave from the terminal at the head of the sound. Arrive before your sailing; there is little else to do if you miss it.
  • Check road status in winter. Homer Tunnel and the Cleddau valley can close.

FAQ

Do I need a cruise?

The viewpoint at the terminal is limited. Almost everyone who comes takes a boat (or a kayak trip). The fiord is the point.

Day trip from Queenstown?

Common and long. Te Anau is the saner base.

Best season?

Year-round. Summer is busier. Winter can be clearer and icy on the road.

Sandflies?

Yes. Bring repellent, especially at the terminal.

Piopiotahi

Milford Sound is a fiord, despite the English name. Mitre Peak, Lady Bowen Falls, and Stirling Falls are the usual cruise landmarks. The area is part of Fiordland National Park and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage area.

Plan the road and the boat as one trip. If the road is closed, the cruise does not matter.
